The friends of Pendeen Watch started this petition to cornwall council

We believe that Pendeen Watch and the surrounding area deserves additional protection from development due to its spectacular natural scenery, importance for wildlife, and recreational value to the local community. The area provides vital habitat for sensitive species such as the Cornish Chough Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary Boloria selene.

There is already recognition of the need to protect this area through its inclusion in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Environmentally Sensitive Area. However, significant and valuable additional protection would be gained if it were covered by an Article 4 direction. This would make a wider set of development types subject to planning regulations.

An Article 4 direction covering a large area of the coastline is currently in place between St Ives and Morvah. A relatively small and quite natural extension of this zone westwards would protect Pendeen Watch, Boat Cove, Portheras Beach and the Portheras Valley among others. Please see the cross-hatched area on the map illustrating the proposed extension to the Article 4 zone on the north coast.

We would urge Cornwall Council to prove their environmental credentials by making this a reality. If the official will exists, an Article 4 designation could be in place by 2022 and the area would gain the full protection that it so clearly deserves.

Please sign this petition to help us demonstrate to Cornwall Council the importance of this issue to local people and visitors alike.

THANK YOU
