Cornwall City Council, Please Fully Support Your Arts Council

Cornwall City Council has decided to cut our funding request from the $50,000 we asked for to $15,000. Though we are grateful for any contribution, $15,000 is not enough for us to function in any remotely efficient way in 2017. Council is unaware of how we contribute to Cornwall and the region, so we are appealing to you, our members and followers, to help let the councillors know we are a necessary and valued community asset.

What do we do? We act as a resource to the arts community. We help enable creativity by offering incubation, resources, reach, advice, connections, advocacy, representation, inclusion, acumen, experience, infrastructure, incredible volunteers, and a safe platform from which to launch innovative and community-enriching programs.

We are a resource to the City of Cornwall in many ways. We are connected to and respected by many arts groups and artists in the community and are adding new connections every day. We have staged or contributed to the success of many art events and initiatives. For example, Apples & Art would not have been as successful as it has been without our help, and it generated a lot of pride and income for the community and it’s artists. YACabuskalooza was a fun family celebration featuring local performers, artists, and arts groups. It covered dance, pop opera, accordion, soloists, duo’s, rock, country, ballads, a tent with working visual artists from Focus Art, face-painting, balloon sculptors, and Benson’s was kind enough to sponsor our refreshment stand. We have the park for it again in 2017 and we’re looking forward to hosting another successful recurring reason for pride and tourism in Cornwall. We have assisted in the success of many art events in and around Cornwall and can continue to do so with appropriate funding.

As an advisor to the Culture Committee we help collect and maintain a database and network of the arts community and help the council, the arts, and the public connect. Those councillors that sit on the committee can attest to our contribution towards the establishment of an Arts Centre in Cornwall, and towards a healthy creative community ready to make it shine. There is no other group better established, equipped, or positioned to run a successful art centre. We could step into that role tomorrow.

We are the most cost-efficient solution available. The $50,000 we have requested for 2017 is significantly less than what previous efforts at addressing the Arts and Culture sector in Cornwall have cost, and a small portion of what the proposed Art Centre projected yearly expense will be. Our incredible and dedicated volunteer base enables us to deliver a high volume of quality services at a very reasonable ROI. The Cornwall taxpayer has spent a total of $78,000 on YAC since our inception in 2012. We have returned many times that if you consider Apples & Art alone. Cornwall’s $50,000 investment for 2017, coupled with our incubated events budgets and our own fundraising efforts, will help us qualify for 3 years of core funding from the Ontario Arts Council starting in 2018.

In 2016 we raised nearly $10,000 from art sales, user fees, private/corporate sponsorship, and fundraising events, but it is very challenging and resource-intensive to do so, and we know we cannot make up the difference in our funding this way. We want to be an Arts Council focused on the enrichment of the Arts and Culture sector, not on fundraising. We have approached the United Counties for funding each year as well, but they have as yet to contribute.

It would be a huge step backward to let all that we have established, all that we have accomplished, all the infrastructure we’ve built, disappear, as it will if our 2017 grant request is not fulfilled. If we have helped you in any way, or you simply agree that we are helping to improve quality of life for all of our residents, please support us now by letting City Council know you want your tax dollars supporting YAC.
