Why this petition matters

Started by Kimberly Burkhart

Cooperstown Central School Varsity and Modified Football is currently being considered as a budget cut item by the Cooperstown Central School Board of Education.  There will be a board of education meeting on Wednesday, February 12th at 5:00 pm in the Jr./Sr. High Library.

Cooperstown's strong football tradition dates back many decades including the varsity, modified, and youth programs.  Football has played a meaningful role in the athletic, social, and personal development of countless youth in our community over the years.  In the Fall of 2019, Cooperstown football programs had approximately 80 players in the K-6 youth program, 22 players in the 7th-9th grade modified program, and approximately 15 players in the varsity program.  For over a hundred of our local youth, football is where they find their structure, self-esteem, team-building, and so much more.  Football provides an opportunity for all of these things in addition to building community and responsibility that will heighten a child's sense of personal well being, build self reliance, provide a more hopeful future, and increase opportunities for a more holistic and successful education.

If we don't join together and peacefully let the board know how we feel, we will lose football.  We are asking everyone that has been positively affected by the sport of football - whether you're a current parent, alumni parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend, alumni, past coach, or current player (yes - bring the kids!) - to sign this petition and come full strength to the board of education meeting on February 12, 2020.  If we show the amount of lives that will be impacted by their decision and the board has an opportunity to see the actual children their decisions are affecting, we may have a chance to change their minds.  Again, please sign the petition and come to the board meeting - bring all current players K-12 and sport any Cooperstown Football gear you have.  We have a Facebook event to track who is coming to the board meeting as well.  Please check that out and let us know if you'll be there.
