NZ Pork started this petition to Consumer Affairs Minister David Clark

Join NZ Pork in calling for clear country of origin labelling on all imported pork, most of which is produced in countries whose animal welfare practices would be illegal in New Zealand.

Consumer Affairs Minister David Clark is letting down Kiwis by refusing calls for mandatory labelling to clearly identify all imported pork.

The Consumers’ Right to Know (Country of Origin of Food) Act 2018 only requires pork and cured pork to be labelled with its country of origin.

All other imported pork which is further processed in New Zealand only needs to include the name and address of a New Zealand supplier on a label.

That means that imported pork is ‘hidden’ from consumers, as only a New Zealand processor, or even a retailer, is identified.

We're urging Kiwis to check the packaging of their pork, because if it says 'made in New Zealand with local and imported ingredients', then chances are it is imported.

Such labelling will mislead many New Zealanders into thinking they are purchasing New Zealand pork when they are purchasing imported pork that has simply been further processed by a New Zealand manufacturer.

While cured pork products (such as ham and bacon) are covered by the Act, any other pork which is further processed in any other way falls outside the current scope of the proposed regulations.

For example, imported pork could be marinated and then sit alongside New Zealand pork in supermarket chillers just showing the name of the New Zealand retailer.

Do you know that approximately 60 per cent of New Zealand’s pork consumption is imported?  Around 85% of this imported pork is further processed in some way.

Some of this is cured (like bacon and ham) and so will be covered by the regulations. But imported pork that is marinated, infused, moisture enhanced, re-formed and used in sausages is not covered.

This is NOT what research has shown consumers want, which is clear country of origin labelling for all pork. Join the 80% of Kiwis who want to know where their pork comes from. Sign the petition today!
