Why this petition matters

The Supreme Court of Appeals has ruled in Afriforum’s favour in reinstating Afrikaans as a medium of instruction at UNISA and given our history of that language being used as a tool of oppression in this country this should not suffice. Why give this language more prominence over others? It’s not even a lingua franca and should not be elevated to status it doesn’t deserve. We must reverse the injustices of the past and not entrench them.  For how long must indigenous languages take a backseat? Is it still a rainbow nation if we entrench the language of the oppressor as a medium of instruction for the people who suffered the most because of the custodian of this language-the black majority of this country? No more. Our mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, children died fighting the injustices associated with this language yet in the days of freedom it is still being forced down our collective throats. No more. Change must not only be said to be happening but must be seen to be happening and I hope my plea to the highest court in the land is heard. There is no justification on any grounds to elevate this language more than it has already. Let’s see if Black Lives Really Matter in the South African judiciary. We live in a democracy where the majority rules and society and institutions should reflect this linguistically as well.
