Ashley Hickey started this petition to Governor Ned Lamont

I drive toward the high school to pick up my son from practice when the light turns red. I stop and wait for it to turn green. A minute or so later, I get the green light. But I don't go. I know if I go as soon as it turns green, I might get hit by a car crossing my pathway. So I wait a bit longer, look both ways and make sure all the cars have stopped. I do this at many intersections in Hamden because it happens every single day. I always look and often wait for the cars crossing after my light turns green because it's all too often that cars in Hamden run red lights.

I live in a neighborhood that encourages my children to walk to a friend's house or school or a local shop. But every time they leave the house, I remind them to stop at all intersections with lights and wait for the WALK signal, then look both ways and make sure all cars are stopped before crossing the street. I remind them because I've seen trucks race through a red light as a child steps into the intersection to cross when they see the WALK signal.  It can be a terrifying experience to cross the street on foot in Hamden.

Red Light running in Hamden and Connecticut needs to stop. Now. There aren't enough police officers to monitor every intersection. Cameras at intersections can stop dangerous or impatient drivers from running the red lights, especially if there is a fine. I admit that I have been in other cities with red light cameras, which are identified with a sign stating the fine and I make sure to stop. This is the only way to make our intersections safer for us and our families!
