Maren Carlson started this petition to Connecitcut residents and

The purpose of this petition is to gather support for a secret ballot in the Senate, which will remove the undue influence of a Senator's party and make it more likely they will vote in a way that reflects their constituents' wishes.

Juleanna Glover, Republican politician advisor, states how the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, will begin the trial immediately once he receives the Articles of Impeachment from the House of Representatives. The rules and resolutions of this trail will need to be decided upon by the Senate- with a simple majority of 51 to 49. Republicans outnumber Democrats 53 to 47, meaning only three Republicans would need to 'break off from the pack' to block any rules they do not agree with. This includes a secret ballot. Only three Republicans would need to support a secret ballot, along with the obvious 47 Democrats. Robert Alexander, a professor of political science at Ohio Northern University and opinion writer for CNN, makes the same point as Glover. He details the counter argument- how a secret ballot goes against the transparency of US senators that we as American citizens deserve. When Alexander Hamilton wrote about Impeachment trials in Federalist Paper 65, he intended the Senate to be a neutral body that was removed from the population- and politics. However, this is not the Senate we have today. A secret ballot would provide a Senate closer to what Hamilton intended when drafting language for Impeachment Trials. A true Senate, a fair Senate, a Senate of the people. R. Alexander's full article: https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/29/opinions/secret-ballot-trump-senate-impeachment-trial-alexander/index.html

Thank you for taking the time to consider this petition and, hopefully, you will sign so this very important issue will be decided not by party politics, but by the will of the American people.
