Why this petition matters

Started by Denise Mayo

My name is Denise Mayo. I live in the Trails End/Brompton community.  Our neighborhood only has one way in and one way out and that is by crossing over a railroad crossing. Trains block our crossing all the time. Last October, 28th and  29th, the train blocked for over 24 hours. 24 hours with the arms down.  I wish I could say this is the first time this has happened but it isnt. This happens on a weekly basis.

We are constantly unable to go about our daily lives because of trains blocking for hours at a time. Think about what that means. It means no ambulance can come if you are having a heart attack. No fire truck can come if your house is on fire. No policeman can come if someone is threatening your life. No help can get to you, at all. We have homes burn to the ground, a special needs man have to be carried by hand across the train while in a diabetic coma. Another nearly bleed to death, unable to get medical care and had to be carried over the train to a paramedic on the other side. One lady was killed while trying to cross the tracks in front of a school bus full of children, including her own.  And that is just some of the stories and ungodly circumstances we have experienced in our neighborhood.

I also wish I could say that this happens only in our community but it does not. It happens in Argo, in Trussville, in Birmingham. There needs to be a change in the laws. We can not allow Norfolk Southern to continue to risk our citizens lives every single day.  They need to be fined for every time they stop longer than 15 minutes. We are asking you to please step up and make this happen. Please sign the petition.  Please change the laws.
