This summer, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment, which, if passed, would prohibit the DEA and the Justice Department from spending taxpayer money to raid, arrest, or prosecute medical marijuana patients and providers in the 12 states where medical marijuana is legal. The amendment has been steadily gaining momentum for the last several years. Studies have shown that personalized e-mails are much more likely to influence members of Congress and their staff. We have provided a sample letter below, but please use our language as a starting point and create a personalized e-mail of your own. If you have a family member or friend who has used medical marijuana, or if you are a patient yourself, please share that information with your member of Congress. It will increase the impact of your letter.
- U.S. House of Representatives
This summer, during consideration of the Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations bill, Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-Calif.) will introduce the Hinchey-Rohrabacher medical marijuana amendment. I'm writing you today to ask for your support on this legislation.
Earlier this year, the American College of Physicians called on the federal government to change its policy towards medical marijuana. In a landmark position paper issued Feb. 14 and available online at http://www.acponline.org/acp_news/medmarinews.htm, this organization of 124,000 physicians, including specialists in treating cancer, heart disease and neurological diseases, called for the federal government to stop arresting medical marijuana patients.
Congressman Hinchey's amendment would prohibit the federal government from interfering in state medical marijuana laws, by arresting seriously ill patients who are using medical marijuana on the advice of their doctors and in compliance with state law. This bill could tremendously improve the lives of people suffering from serious illness the 12 states with medical marijuana laws.
I urge you to support the Hinchey-Rohrabacher medical marijuana amendment. Your vote of support will benefit tens of thousands of patients, and I will be immensely grateful. Thank you.
