Daniel Phillips started this petition to Congress and

"The Stars and Stripes" is a vital source of news for our active duty military and their families, especially those overseas, as well as for veterans, retirees, DoD civilians, and contractors. This historical independent newspaper has been in continuous publication since WWII.

A group of fifteen bipartisan Senators are trying to persuade the Department of Defense to reconsider, stating that "The Stars and Stripes is an essential part of our nation's freedom of the press that serves the very population charged with defending that freedom."

Still, the DOD is going forward with their plans to end its publication on September 30th, 2020.

Yes, this will purportedly save $15.5 million of the DOD's $700 billion budget. But this money has already been approved by Congress, and I argue that the savings are not worth the vital services and information this paper provides.

I urge you to go to www.stripes.com to view the types of reporting and articles this newspaper provides. Hopefully, you will understand the importance of the news provided to those overseas.

Please support this petition to keep this independent, bipartisan, historical newspaper available to all those who depend upon it, and have depended upon it for over 80 years.

Contact your local and state representatives to get behind these distinguished fifteen senators. They are: Senators Dianne Feinstein; John Boozman; Richard Durbin; Jerry Moran; Patty Murray; Shirley Capito; Richard Blumenthal; Christopher Van Hollen; Doug Jones; Sherrod Brown; Margaret Wood Hassan; Tammy Duckworth; Jon Tester; Kyrsten Sinema; and Susan M. Collins.

Please join them in this effort
