We the undersigned hereby call on Congress to enact a law creating a new Smithsonian Museum for Women’s History on the National Mall.
Women make up more than half of our nation’s population and have played absolutely essential roles in every part of our nation’s development. While most Americans know the stories of Rosa Parks, Abigail Adams, and Susan B. Anthony, countless other brilliant leaders, innovators, explorers, gifted artists, scholars and trailblazers are virtually unknown.
A recent report of the independent and bipartisan American Museum of Women’s History Congressional Commission concluded, “America needs and deserves a physical national museum dedicated to showcasing the historical experiences and impact of women in this country.” The Commission’s report lays out a blueprint for Congress to follow to create this new museum and why this is so important for our country.
A Women’s History Museum would tell the stories, celebrate the accomplishments, and illuminate the history of American women in ways that will inspire and inform people of all ages and all walks of life. And it is long overdue.
We urge Congressional leaders to support legislation to finally create a Smithsonian museum on the National Mall to honor the women whose contributions have shaped our nation.
