Reform the Criminal Justice System
This petition had 147 supporters
The United States has the highest incarcerated population in the world at 2.2 million. Five times as many violent crimes take place each year in American prisons as in the general public, and the rate of sexual abuse is thirty times higher behind bars. The criminal justice system is too large and too negligent. This project aims to raise awareness about a facet of this problem: recidivism. Recidivism is when a previously released inmate commits a new crime and returns to prison. 3 in 4 people who are released from prison are re-arrested within five years. However, there is a simple solution to this pressing issue. Through a combination of increasing safety and educational opportunities within prisons and forming stronger parole programs outside of them, the recidivism rate in this country can be greatly reduced. Sign this petition to encourage the federal government to re-examine their policies on the criminal justice system.
