On September 11, 2012, former Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty lost their lives in Benghazi, Libya. Woods and Doherty acted without regard for their own personal safety in order to protect and save the lives of others under terrorist attack. Their actions exhibited uncommon selflessness and valor and should be recognized. The purpose of this petition is to request that Congress award Woods and Doherty with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor a civilian can receive.
There is no question Woods and Doherty deserve the Gold Medal for their heroic actions in Benghazi. When a well-coordinated terrorist attack was carried out against the consulate building that housed Ambassador Chris Stevens, the lives of the ambassador and others on the premises were at risk. Without regard for their personal safety, Woods and Doherty knowingly placed themselves in grave danger in order to bring aid to those under attack. Leaving the relative safety of a nearby CIA annex building, the two men traveled at great peril to the consulate building a mile away, where they attempted to rescue Ambassador Stevens and the approximately 30 employees in the vicinity. Braving heavy fire, the two searched the consulate and were able to bring most of those in danger to safety, effectively saving their lives. They returned again to the consulate to look for the missing Ambassador and Sean Smith, a security officer. Although they were unable to locate Ambassador Stevens, they located Smith, who was already fallen. Once again travelling at great peril, Woods and Doherty removed Smith’s body to the CIA annex. Once at the annex, Woods and Doherty bravely continued to fight attackers from positions on the roof. Doherty and Woods fought on until their deaths, by mortar and gun fire, respectively.
The American people owe a great debt to Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty. They made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom and their fellow countrymen. Woods and Doherty are survived by loving wives, children, parents, family, and friends. These loved ones deserve no less than to have the story of their fallen told.
The United States of America can ask no more of a citizen than to lay down his life for his country. In return, the United States government owes Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty the evaluation of their heroic actions and the award of the appropriate honor.
