Melissa LaViola started this petition to Congress

I am a 29 year old, Colombian-American community college student.  In my college career, I have not only experienced but have also witnessed the obstacles low-income students face in completing a college education due to prioritizing economic survival over their education.  In 1964, the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program was created to assist low-income students afford and work their way through college.  Despite the progress made, access to higher education to low-income students has been perpetually narrowed creating a cycle of never-ending deterrents.  The FWS Program has been reaching less and less low-income students as the rise of higher education has skyrocketed and students find themselves taking out loans resulting in high debt upon graduation.  However, research shows that students who partake in the FWS Program are 3.2% more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree and 2.4% are more likely to find employment than students not enrolled in the program.  In January, 2019, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici and Congressman Derek Kilmer introduced H.R.792 - Opportunities for Success Act of 2019 to the House of Representatives.  This Act would increase funding for this program to $2.5 billion over five years, reform the work-study formula, target work-study low-income students, promote career readiness to synchronize jobs with career objectives, create pathways from education to work by investing $30 million to help connect low-income students to high-quality internships, thus, enhancing student success.  H.R. 792 has not been voted on by Congress.  PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TODAY URGING CONGRESS TO PASS THIS ACT TO GIVE OUR LOW-INCOME STUDENTS ACCESS TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION.
