Loose their wages and benefits after leaving office

Politicians keep saying we need to cut unnecessary spending, but keep the fact hidden that once they leave office - at least at the federal level - those same politicians keep their wages and benefits for a lifetime. This is costing the American people how much, in the meantime how many programs for the needy are being cut while these people don't have to go look for another position or worry about their benefits.
Effective January 1, 2001, the annual salary of the president of the United States was increased to $400,000 per year, including a $50,000 expense allowance.

The increase was approved as part of the Treasury and General Government Appropriations Act (Public Law 106-58), passed in the closing days of the 106th Congress.
Pension $199,700 per year
Transition Expenses
Staff and Office Allowances first 30 months $150,000 then $96,000 annually
Secret Service Protection for life

Vice President's Salary $230,700 for life

Congressional pay varies depending on how long they stayed.

I believe this money could be better spent on programs to help the needy. Most of the people that have held positions in congress or above have degrees and could go out and find other employment but have been living off Uncle Sam for years. Please sign my petition so this money could be used to help decress the deficit and help people that really need the help.
