Call for a New National Anthem

Recently there have been some people in these United States who seek to erase some of our history in an effort to right some wrongs of so long ago. With this said, the past is the past and it can not be changed. This past, all of it, should have a place somewhere in our collective consciousness. We can, however, look at it from a different perspective, and we should from time to time. Not to long for a time where things could be the same as they were, but to continually learn from our past so our children and our children's children never seek to bind down those they feel are less than equal to the rest of us. For it is said in so many words, those who fail to remember their past are inclined to repeat it.

With these words we call on ALL Americans of every color, every national origin, every political persuasion, and of every strip, regardless of your positions on past or current issues, to stand together with all other Americans and help the people who hurt heal their personal and our national wounds, so we may all participate, as President Lincoln said in the midst of the Civil War, in a new birth of Freedom that that human spirit in us all yearns for and all humans have a right to enjoy. It is only by all of our efforts to stop, as our national hero Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," will we all survive and thrive.

With this new birth of Freedom we Call for a new National Anthem.

This change in the National Anthem is in line with the history of popular Patriotic songs being predominant at public events before The Star-Spangled Banner, by Congressional Resolution, and President Hoover's signature, became the official National Anthem of the United States in 1931.

Other such songs used at official functions before 1931 were, "Hail Columbia," "My Country 'Tis of Thee," and "America the Beautiful," among others.

With Lee Greenwood's approval, for this new birth of Freedom for America, we Call on Congress, and the President of the United States, by appropriate means, to make the Patriotic song, "God Bless the U.S.A." our new National Anthem.

Since Mr. Greenwood released God Bless the U.S.A. in 1984, though non-political, has been sung at political events, during times of national crisis' such as 9/11, every 4th of July and other Patriotic holidays, at private and public events, or just when an American wants to be uplifted.

The well liked God Bless the U.S.A. reached platinum with over 1 million recordings sold. It has been recorded by the likes of, the pop group Jump5 in 2001, Dolly Parton in 2003, performed by the 2003 American Idol season two finalists and released as a single with proceeds going to charity. Beyonce also recorded God Bless the U.S.A. in 2008. Following the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011, she re-released her version of the song with proceeds going to charity. In a statement Beyone said, "I cannot think about anything more appropriate to do to help these families. Almost 10 years [after 9/11], it is still so painful for all Americans, especially those who lost loved ones. We were all affected by the tragedies of 9/11 and continue to keep the families who lost loved ones close to our hearts."

The a cappella group Home Free has been performing God Bless the U.S.A. ever since the band's inception in 2000. They released a music video of it on YouTube with 11 million views.

Greenwood worked with Home Free and the United States Air Force Band Singing Sergeants to release their version on July 1, 2020 in our time of national need.

I add my name to other American's names on this petition and together with Pride, Call on Congress, and the President of the United States to make "God Bless the U.S.A." our new National Anthem.
