Hosting the African Cup of Nations should promote development and good governance in mother Africa. Having failed to deliver infrastructure for AFCON 2019, Cameroon is also likely to miss the deadline for the 2021 competition.

More disturbing is the fact that a separatist attempt by the anglophone minority has been met with a military campaign in which unarmed civilians and arrested armed separatists are summarily executed by the military. Over 3000 people have died, the majority of them unarmed or fully subdued. Hundreds of villages in the anglophone regions have also been burned down by the military, with impunity. This military crackdown has instead boosted support for the separatist project among the anglophone population. Crisis analysts predict a drawn out civil war far beyond 2021. This adds to the persistent security problem of boko haram in the northern part of the country.

We thus see that the combination of gross human rights violation, increasing insecurity and inability to furnish quality infrastructure for the 2021 games calls for relocation of AFCON 2021. By signing this petition, we call on the Confederation of African Football to relocate AFCON 2021 from Cameroon to another deserving African nation. Such a move will be a sign of solidarity with the marginalized and traumatized anglophone minority.

L'organisation de la CAN devrait promouvoir le développement et la bonne gouvernance en Afrique. N'ayant pas réussi à mettre en place l'infrastructure pour la CAN 2019, le Cameroun manquera probablement le délai d'infrastructure fixé pour la CAN 2021.

Plus troublant encore est le fait qu'une tentative séparatiste de la minorité anglophone s'est heurtée à une campagne militaire au cours de laquelle des civils non armés et des séparatistes armés arrêtés sont sommairement exécutés par l'armée. Plus de 3000 personnes sont mortes, dont la majorité sont des civils non armés ou des séparatistes soumis physiquement. Des centaines de villages des deux régions anglophones ont également été incendiés par l'armée, en toute impunité. Cette répression militaire a au contraire renforcé le soutien au projet séparatiste parmi la population anglophone. Les analystes de crise prévoient une longue guerre civile bien au-delà de 2021. Cela ajoute au problème de sécurité persistant de boko haram dans le nord du pays.

Nous voyons donc que la combinaison d’une violation flagrante des droits de l’homme, d’une insécurité croissante et de l’impossibilité de fournir une infrastructure de qualité pour les jeux de 2021 appelle à la relocalisation de la CAN 2021. En signant cette pétition, nous appelons la Confédération africaine de football à déplacer la CAN 2021 du Cameroun à une autre nation africaine méritante. Une telle démarche sera un signe de solidarité avec la minorité anglophone marginalisée et traumatisée.
