The world is now horrified by the gruesome pictures and videos from the Ukrainian city Bucha. Russia conducted the worst atrocity in Europe since the end of the Yugoslav wars, torturing, raping, and killing hundreds of Ukrainian civilians. The total death war of this war, waged by the president of Russia Vladimir Putin, is far beyond tens of thousands of people. In 1995, Serbs committed a genocidal killing in Srebrenica. In 1999, it was the NATO bombarding of Serbia that prevented similar crimes from happening in Kosovo. Now it seems that the lessons of Srebrenica were not learned. The longer the West waits; the longer it watches how Russia marches through Ukraine, more and more Ukrainians will be killed by Russians. The West does not understand how Putin acts. In fact, the only reason why Putin decided to attack Ukraine is the constant reassurances from the West that they will not intervene. That the West will give him Ukraine on the plate and do nothing. Putin knows that he cannot win the war with NATO, so he threatens to use nuclear weapons to destroy the world. Do we really believe that this man, the man who fears death more than anything, the man who spent the last two years in the bunker due to COVID-19, the man who does not leave his residency without supervision from 20 doctors, that this man really can sacrifice everything and his life to use a nuclear weapon against nuclear powers? This is nothing more than a bluff, the bluff the West buys. The very second Putin understands that his actions will have consequences for him, he will back down. It is the responsibility of the West, the West which filled Ukraine with false fantasies of NATO and EU membership, the West which gave Ukraine to Putin without hesitation, it is the West's responsibility to stand up against Putin and protect the Ukrainian people by all means necessary. History shows that appeasement only leads to more horrible and brutal wars. We ask NATO to not repeat past mistakes and to save Ukraine from Russia.
