Condemn Injustices Concerning the Immigration System

We, the undersigned, urge the City Council of Winston-Salem, North Carolina to approve an official resolution condemning certain inhumane and unreasonable practices of the Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 and the current “Zero Tolerance” Policy as well as endorsing fairer immigration policies.

Of its 245,000 residents, Winston-Salem has an immigrant community of 24,500 living and working within its borders. Due to this, we urge the City Council to condemn the treatment of immigrants from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and other regions by the Federal Government. Additionally, we urge the Council to condemn the constant threat of deportation, excessive expansion of minor criminal infractions qualifying for reason of deportation, prolonged mandatory detention before court hearings, and forced family separation on the Southern Border.

We also urge the Council to support the proposed policies of earned American citizenship, deportation hearings strictly for undocumented immigrants who have committed a Class 1 or 1A Misdemeanor or Felony and have been proven to pose a threat to a community, and policies which emphasize job skill as well as family-based sponsorship.

Therefore, we urge the City Council of Winston-Salem to condemn certain immigration practices and endorse policies to reform the current Immigration System.
