Petition for Concordia to provide a pass/fail option for the Winter 2020 semester

The last thing we should worry about during a global pandemic is getting an A.

Considering that the world is going through an unprecedented crisis in the form of the COVID-19 Pandemic, we demand that Concordia university give the option for students to choose a pass/fail grading system, and the option to extend deadlines beyond April 15th without academic or financial repercussions.

During the Winter 2020 semester, students are facing challenges that will negatively impact their academic performance in ways that are disproportionate and, in some cases, severe. Potential challenges may include:

  • Adapting to social isolation/distancing;
  • Being displaced (such as the rushed closing of Concordia residences);
  • Suffering heightened anxiety from the negative and constant COVID-19 news cycle;
  • Being unable to focus on coursework due to the effects of a pandemic;
  • Having divergent levels of access to the internet;
  • Having medical and psychological appointments canceled;
  • Needing to redesign study plans right before finals season;
  • Adapting to online teaching;
  • Receiving lessons from teachers who are not trained in online teaching;
  • Not being able to access the library and its resources

For these reasons, we demand Concordia University give the option for students to change to a pass/fail system or have an extended deadline (including, but not limited to: freezing grades (where possible), suspending their term until universities reopen and offering the course for free or with credits to take missed sessions and exams), to reduce the pandemic’s impact on academic success. At this point in time, all students should be credited for continuing to study if they are able to.

Other schools have begun practicing this initiative, or have in the past. Here is a list of institutions that have put pass/fail grading into practice:
