Cabarrus Justice Coalition started this petition to Concord City Council

In honor of Ronnie Long who was wrongfully convicted in Cabarrus County in 1976. The Long family has lived on this street for 40+ years. The Long family has experienced grave tragedy through this process. Both Ronnie’s father and mother passed awaiting his release. In memory of his parents last wishes to see their son home I motion to change Melrose to Ronnie W. Long Way SW.

Summary of Ronnie Longs Case:

Long was arrested on May 10, 1976, after being asked to accompany two local police officers to the Concord, North Carolina, police station to resolve a trespassing warrant for a charge that had been dismissed earlier that same day. Upon his arrival, Long was instead arrested for burglary and rape and has remained incarcerated for 40 years since. Long has steadfastly maintained his innocence, from his first contact with Concord police in 1976 until now. His claim of innocence is persuasively reinforced by newly discovered exculpatory evidence, which has been trickled out piecemeal to the defense in 2005, 2006, and 2015. None of the new evidence was available to Long at the time of his 1976 trial or prior to his 1989 habeas petition. The results of physical and forensic examinations that may have exonerated Long were withheld from the defense at trial. Additionally, the victim’s identification of Long ten days after the crime was highly suggestive and inherently unreliable. The circumstances of the trial further undermine confidence in the verdict. An all- white jury, which was drawn from a pool of prospective jurors hand-screened by the County Sheriff, included four jurors with employment connections to the victim’s spouse, and a racially polarized atmosphere exist.

***Update as of August 2020 Federal appeals court rules Ronnie Long’s due process rights were violated in 1976 conviction. Charges have been dismissed against Ronnie Long, the North Carolina man released from prison after maintaining his innocence for 44 years, Long's attorney says. Long was released from prison as a court ruled to vacate his 1976 rape conviction.
