Concerned Parents Of MAA started this petition to The Children's Guild

We, the undersigned, parents, grandparents, community members and supporters of Monarch Annapolis love our school and our community. Monarch Annapolis is rapidly losing its unique family/community character and bleeding its original teaching staff (those there from year one), due to the extremely negative impact of Principal Amstutz. We ask for the immediate removal of Principal Amstutz.

Monarch Annapolis was founded on creating a school that truly reflects our amazing Annapolis community. In the first two years, we truly became like a family. However, due to lack of support from The Children’s Guild, we lost both administrators and several teachers that were overwhelmed and feared the unknown. Principal Amstutz and Mr. Clapper were hired as their replacements last summer.

One year later, our incomparable staff and community is rapidly declining. Due to her poor leadership, we lost 19 staff members this year- many of whom have been at Monarch Annapolis since day one. This does not include the 4 teachers that left in the middle of the school year. Many former staff members agree that her tactics were often divisive and underhanded. Specifically, if she felt threatened by that particular staff member. This happened more often with African American staff members.

According the AACPS job description of a Principal, a prerequisite for hiring them is that they must possess the following “Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:”

·         Able to build a school culture which takes account of the richness and diversity of the school’s communities.

·         Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

·         Have the ability to recruit and maintain a teaching and support staff that reflects the diversity of the student population and community.

Principal Amstutz has done nothing to build school culture. She did not celebrate the children at all last year (no honor roll awards, perfect attendance, etc). She did not take an active role in the Hispanic Heritage month celebration or the Black History Month celebration. She also has made no attempt to truly learn more about the rich history of Annapolis and the role that many of our families play in that history.

Principal Amstutz has not demonstrated the ability to work with diverse populations. This was very obvious during the school year. She often did not respond to African American parents requests. She even had one parent wait in the front office for more than an hour before speaking to her. More importantly, because of her ineffectiveness at working with/communicating with people of color, The Children’s Guild had to hire two African American men for our leadership team to make up for her extreme lack in this area.

Principal Amstutz does not have the ability to recruit and maintain a diverse teaching staff. We started the 2019-2020 school year with 5 Black teachers- a relatively small percentage of our teaching staff, but promising. As of today (08/15/2020), only one of those teachers remain. 2 of them resigned in the middle of the school year; one was asked not to return (it was said that her position would be gone next year, but her part-time White counterpart ended up receiving a full time position); 2 were forced to switch grade levels. One of them was placed in a grade level outside of her certification area, and she was recently found a better position at another school.

In our current climate, where we are focused on social justice and the inequalities Black/Brown children have faced for decades in the public schools, it is more important than ever to have leaders that understand how important this is. We need leaders that value our children- that value our community. Especially with a school like Monarch Annapolis, that has nearly 80% Black and Latino students. Principal Amstutz does not value these students, their families, or their communities.

We, the undersigned, are demanding as taxpayers and citizens that these concerns be met without resistance. We petition to remove Principal Amstutz from Monarch Annapolis.
