Mental Health Matters: A Call for Awareness and Accessible Mental Health Services.
In today’s society, mental health issues are irrefutably one of the biggest dilemmas we struggle to battle. It has been a very timely topic as no one, regardless of their life status, is exempted from its severe threat. All over the world, a huge portion of the population encounters serious disorders like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and so on. Some remain undiagnosed but continue to grapple against their harsh reality, while some end up resorting to an irrevocable decision and taking their own lives.
Considering how perceptible and relevant it is to the eyes of society, a vast majority of people still remain ignorant and lacking from any genuine awareness and understanding of what it constitutes. Unawareness, more than just having insufficient epistemic access to mental health, is already one of the prime reasons as to why these issues continue to propagate in society. Because of it, we are unable to acknowledge the significance and reality of mental health, but also fail to realize how we could contribute to nullifying it. This then sets a stigma which invalidates what some are experiencing, discriminates against them, and even shame them for what they are going through – which only exacerbates the problem at hand.
We, the “Threeshold of Hope”, comprised by Aliya Dacoycoy, Guilian Ortega, and Jessica Jaime, calls on the concerned government units to act upon this problem. Together, we aim to push for better systems that educates people about mental health, have mandates that eradicates the stigma and discrimination, and provide sufficient help like counseling and medication to those who suffer from these problems.
If we don’t start lobbying for this today and acting on it, we are basically just subjecting our people into the shackles of grave distress and torment. Truly, we can’t bear another life lost or another period of helplessness, which is why we stand in solidarity and vindicate that change must come now.
