Why this petition matters

Started by Shari Ross

This petition, supported by the undersigned, is directed at the Great Neck Park District and its officials. Its goal is to demand an open discussion about the construction taking place in our beautiful Allenwood Park.

Without a single official open hearing, the Board approved the construction of a “pilot” off-leash dog park. The current size is out of proportion, cutting off an enormous portion of the park. The fencing materials being used are ugly. The result is that the largest, most beautiful open space in all of Great Neck is being subdivided and ruined.

We love dogs and want dog parks where our dogs can roam and play.  But this version is too much! It takes a large part of the park away from other uses and is visually unacceptable.  We call on the Park District to hold genuine open meetings to work with the wider community to figure out how to best build a dog park that serves all our residents, including local dog owners who have been longing for an enclosed area for dogs in Allenwood Park.

There are several issues that have not been publicly discussed with the surrounding community:

1. Safety for both dogs and other park users;

2. Environmental Impact;

3. Design: aesthetics, safety, and security

4. Impact on surrounding community

Please sign this petition to create a genuine community-based discussion before this version becomes permanent!
