Stop UBER's Socio Economic Bias Practices

Dear Concerned Citizens of Chicago,Uber Users , and even drivers who experience racial/ethnic bias and support riders who experience bias of any type,

Background
Uber along with its competitive technology was primarily constructed to remedy a growing problem of discriminatory driving practices as seen in various cities with cab drivers. Yet, TechCrunch cites that based on finding from the National Bureau of  Economic Research, "It turns out that black people have to wait longer for rides in Seattle, according to a recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The study, which researchers conducted in Seattle and Boston, looked at the results of nearly 1,500 rides hailed via Lyft, Uber and Flywheel on controlled routes.Uber's mission statement is “make transportation as reliable as running water, everywhere, for everyone.” ... The Why (INCIDENT)?

On the evening of January 3 in front of a premier hotel/restaurant in Downtown Chicago a friend requested an UBER XL to escort me home.  Upon arriving I entered the driver's car who after initially being cordial, abruptly stopped the car when he learned of the south side destination, summoned for my colleague, and then expressed that he canceled the trip because he "does not go to the southside". When reminded by said colleague and witness (doorman of hotel) that this is against policy and a violation of his rights as a customer and mine as a rider, he reiterated adding that "I should not stop driving for Uber, South Siders should stop calling in".  He further said he does not have to go if he feels unsafe going there. As consumers and an ex driver we were appalled, disgusted, embarrassed and angered.  I let the driver know we would be filing a complaint.

Desired outcome:

This driver needs to be formally suspended or fired for his actions as well as others who conduct themselves in a discriminatory way.  Uber needs to be held accountable to tract and discipline their drivers who operate in this way.

Next steps?

While uber did respond a attempt a remedy of $5 credit and acknowledge the incident, more awareness need to be brought. YOUR VOICE NEEDS TO USED TO GALVANIZE THIS EFFORT. PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE ANY SIMILAR INCIDENTS WITH AS MUCH DETAIL AS POSSIBLE. THESE RESULTS (ANONYMOUSLY) WILL BE SHARED WITH THE COMPANIES HEADQUARTERS AND LOCAL NEWS TO BRING LIGHT TO A GROWING POPULATION
