PLEASE SAVE OUR VILLAGE!

In an era in which the biggest cities in the world are closing their centres to cars, and in which some countries close whole islands and villages to traffic, the Concello de Ares proposes to increase the parking in the centre of the small village of Redes from 75 to 200 spaces. For 10 months of the year, Redes has little more than 100 inhabitants. In order to extend the car park, they will expropriate farming land being worked at present, and build an access road and a roundabout from the main road when, at 300 metres, along that main road, there is abundant unused land. The summer visitors could easily walk those 300 metres.
Redes (Ares, La Coruña) is a charming little village, quiet and car-free in most of the centre, which has kept the aesthetics and singularity of the Galician fishing villages of the end of the 19th century. In 2007 the Colexio Oficial de Arquitectos de Galicia (Official School of Architects of Galicia) awarded Redes the prize of sustainable architecture. Redes does not have a great beach or Michelin-rated restaurants; it has half a dozen streets through which it is a pleasure to promenade looking at the pretty houses and discovering between them passages that run down to the sea; streets on which the children can still run and play safe from cars and their pollution.
That is why I ask you to sign this petition asking that they do not extend the carpark in the centre of Redes.
