Comrades Marathon For All. End focused discrimination.

Marathons are known to celebrate a sense of camaraderie, express incredible athletic prowess, and challenge perceived limitations. The Comrades Marathon is - or should be - no different. However, wheelchair athletes, Chaeli Mycroft & Anita Engelbrecht, in wheelchairs designed for running, assisted by accomplished running partners, have been denied the opportunity to participate in the 2016 Comrades Marathon. Other disabilities (blind runners assisted by guide runners, amputees) have been participating and celebrated by the race organisers for years.

The CMA rules state that no wheelchairs nor mechanical aids are permitted. This rule has already been compromised as prostheses, knee replacements, etc. are deemed mechanical, yet these athletes are accepted and participate without question.

This rule is against our constitutional rights as well as being in contravention of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. According to South African and International law, people with disabilities are entitled to free participation in sporting events and cannot be discriminated against on the basis of disability. Logistical challenges can and have been overcome. Logistics cannot be used as a reason for exclusion.

There is no room in South Africa for focused discrimination against wheelchair users in sport. If you agree, show your support by signing this petition.
