Single mothers' right to give consent for issuance of Nigerian passport to their kids

Is single-motherhood a crime in Nigeria? Why does the single-mother in Nigeria, in addition to bearing the pains of being abandoned by the father of her child (in most cases) have to be subjected to grovelling before the uninterested, absent father of her child for a "letter of consent" before her child can be issued with a Nigerian passport? Why do absentee fathers have so much parental rights? What if the mother was raped by unknown men? Why is the Nigerian single-mother being stripped of her rights to own her child, abandoned by his/her biological father? What if a woman decides on a sperm donor? Wil she also be aaked to provide this demeaning document? An immigration officer in Port Harcourt said to me "This is Nigeria. We don't do single mothers here". Really?

We are gathering signatures, to compel the Nigerian Immigration Service to abrogate the humiliating requirement of "letter of consent" from the father of the child before he/she can be accorded the dignity of being issued with a Nigerian passport.
