In many Behavioral Health Units, the goal of treatment is stabilization with minimal time for treatment; the main goal becomes difficult to obtain! Not to mention the other extended barriers, such as insufficient access to patient beds, leading patients to become discharged without proper treatment and unsafe and adequate aftercare. Many patients also struggle to navigate through community health agencies without a warm handoff and often experience crisis again and return to psychiatric hospitalization. Not to mention the worries patients experience when insurance companies limit coverage for mental health services when patients are experience a crisis. Psychiatric hospitalization can be traumatic and triggering for the patient. Therefore, we must provide the proper care and treatment that allows both patients and staff to have adequate access to care and provide treatment. Our mission in this petition is to advocate for comprehensive care for all Behavioral Health Units to improve the continuum of care for individuals experiencing severe mental illness while also improving the discharge process to existing community mental health services. We want to make sure patients and families feel supported and safe when hospitalized, and the only way to ensure this is with comprehensive care.
