Why this petition matters

Compel Big Fashion Businesses to Disclose Information About Their Business Practices and Supply Chain to Prevent Violations of Human Rights:

The contemporary U.S. fashion industry has evolved to become a fast-paced, highly competitive industry that is reliant on garment manufacturing factories in developing countries. While this facet of capitalism that emphasizes cost minimization by moving production to regions with the lowest production cost which results in savings that are translated to lower prices of garments to the final consumer, the social and environmental cost is unjustifiable and untenable. The garment factories that are contracted by big fashion businesses in the U.S. are rife with international labor standards violations, environmental pollution, and multiple human rights violations. Furthermore, in addition to the unsafe working environments and unfair compensation of the laborers, sexual and verbal abuse is commonplace in addition to the exposure to dangerous toxins that result in the overall health of the factory employees.

As a means of redressing this sad state of affairs, we are appealing for your assistance by signing this petition to force the U.S. Congress to pass transparency legislation that compels big fashion businesses to disclose information about their business practices and supply chain to both the public and regulators. This transparency bill is meant to piece the veil of corporate secrecy and compel big fashion businesses to act in responsible and ethical manners as global citizens. Through the enhanced regulatory efforts such as the ban on imports from fashion product supply lines non to enable or facilitate environmental pollution, human rights violations, and child labor, the transparency bill will be a force of ethical capitalism with the U.S. leading the way for other developed nations to follow. Your signature means a lot to the current and future generations both in developing nations and the globe in general as we unite to promote social and environmental justice within the globalized fashion industry.
