Concerned Tofino Residents started this petition to Mayor Josie Osborne

This petition is an opportunity for the residents of our Heart-Strong West Coast to express and voice our concerns regarding RCMP officer Andrew Waddell. There have been a number of incidents throughout the years where this officer’s behavior has come into question. His actions caught on video in Cumberland (January 28, 2016) of forcefully pinning a teenage boy to the ground, raised concerns about police brutality. A recent exposure in Tofino (April 25, 2019) caught him pinning an already distressed and mentally distraught woman to the ground, sobbing and screaming for help beneath him. These are events that were caught on camera, shared on social media and have brought forward many concerns from Tofino residents. This also brings to the forefront, concern of how far the misuse of his power may go when there are no cameras involved.

RCMP officers across the country are taught about crisis de-escalation and handling possible mental health incidents as part of their training. With Tofino being a particularly isolated area with limited resources available for those in vulnerable positions, it is even more imperative for local law enforcement to use greater sensitivity and diligence when interacting with members of our community. Actions of force create hostility and are unacceptable in this community, which operates on respect, understanding, compassion and love. There have already been innumerable acts of hurt and injustice done on this land. There are already immeasurable layers of healing to be done.

NO MORE.

We need change. We need accountability.
We cannot operate in outdated, fearful ways.

We will not tolerate our children being threatened, traumatized and taken down. We will not tolerate our women being pinned to the ground screaming. We will not tolerate the mistreatment and abuse of Indigenous People.

Please sign this petition to accelerate change. To support compassion rather than force. To ensure healing and not further harming. To protect our children, to protect our women and to stand up for our whole community.
