PETA has received a confirmation from the Nebraska State Patrol that TWJ will not grind the 70,000 chickens.
According to PETA, the Nebraska egg company TWJ Farms is planning to, on November 12, grind up approximately 70,000 chickens while they are still alive. The practice is reportedly standard procedure at the company's factory farms and has resulted in the death of some hundreds of thousands of hens. Claybaugh, the CEO of the company, says the spent hens are 'recycled' to be used in dog and cat food. According to him, the grinding process kills the chickens more quickly than gassing, and he considers it to be more humane for that reason. Maceration is an acceptable method of euthanasia for day-old poultry - it is common procedure to kill unwanted male chicks by dumping them into a grinder. Although death is reportedly instantaneous for chicks, the result can be very different for adult chickens. In many cases, the grinder fails to kill the animals, resulting in the ejection of mutilated chickens with missing wings or limbs, who are subsequently left to die.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has been asked to investigate these possible violations of Nebraska's Livestock Animal Welfare Act. Please demand the company's CEO to end these horrific killings !
Egg production methods are never cruelty-free. Adopting a vegan diet is perhaps the single most important action you can take to prevent needless cruelty to animals.
