Save Grabouw’s Forestry :: sign the memorandum to save the forestry industry

This petition had 524 supporters

Grabouw’s 100 year old forestry industry will be terminated through a bureaucratic bungle, if replanting cannot begin within the next 18 months. This industry which employs more than 12000 people in our region cannot be revived unless action is taken immediately. We are asking our communities to stand firm on this.

If Grabouw’s forests go:

Unemployment, communities devastated

No trained fire-fighting service (forestry was responsible for this)

Loss of shade on hiking and biking routes

Deforestation of area around sewerage works leads to increased odour

No organisation capable of managing deforested area, so regrowth haphazard

Sawmills closing (we are already importing inferior pine from New Zealand)

Less trees, means less rain – Grabouw is an important water catchment area for Cape Town

Loss of skills – the Cape used to be one of the world’s premier training areas for forestry

Reduction in tourism investment

This is an issue that goes beyond Grabouw and into other towns in the area and beyond. Help us show those in power that we are serious about keeping our forests and our jobs.
