Rochester: Take a Stand!
Rochester: Take a Stand!
Have you ever believed in something so strongly that you took a day off from work to support that cause? Well, the teachers at Rochester Community School Corporation in Rochester, Indiana have. Yet, the Rochester School board doesn’t see fit to give its teachers the day off or to give them an eLearning day to support the teachers and community in a cause that affects everyone who has children and the students themselves. Many of the teachers have taken a personal day to support the cause at great expense to themselves and the School Board still doesn’t want to listen. With this many teachers out of the building, it is a potentially unsafe situation for the students.
Thousands of teachers, parents and students are gathering to support education and to show lawmakers that a change needs to happen. That things can’t continue the way they are. That the laws they are making are not beneficial for students and school districts.
Indiana Lawmakers are wasting millions of dollars on unnecessary testing while also cutting funding to schools. This is creating a drastic hardship for some of the poorest counties in the State. Lawmakers are placing kids on educational tracks that aren't going to benefit them for the future, including forcing students with significant cognitive disabilities to sit in classes like Algebra rather than learning important life skills.
Another thing that people do not take into consideration is that many teachers go above their set standards. Teachers have more jobs than an educational mentor. Many teachers gain the trust of students who have not been comfortable with anyone else. Bonds become formed. When a student feels enough comfort to open up to a teacher, you know that the teacher has went above and beyond their job. So when your children go to school, they are not only going to learn, they are going to gain some knowledge and to open up about something that has been on their mind recently. They are going to feel like someone cares. They are going in order to gain some peace of mind. So, when I say that teachers are very much underpaid, I hope you can agree with me.
If you believe the teachers and students at Rochester Community Schools should have the right to fight for their school, please sign this petition asking the school board to close their schools on November 19th and to implement an eLearning day.
