Why this petition matters

Started by Michael Daly

We, the undersigned are concerned residents who urge our elected officials to act now to alleviate our East End Housing Crisis and allow for the creation of adequate Community Housing in the townships of East Hampton, Southampton, Shelter Island, Southold and Riverhead and the villages and hamlets on the East End of Long Island.

Furthermore, we pledge to show up and support our elected officials during the public meetings where decisions will be made to implement inclusionary zoning that permits local residents and public-private partnerships to create much needed Community Housing.

We know that there are solutions being employed in communities around the country, such as Accessory Apartments, Accessory Dwelling Units (tiny homes), Multi-Family Homes, Workforce Housing Zoning in Business Districts and Cluster Housing Developments that foster Community Housing while reducing vehicular traffic, carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption and protecting our rural character and fragile environment.

We recognize that adequate Community Housing is about who teaches our children, who responds to our emergency calls, who cares for us when we are sick and about keeping families together. It’s also about sustaining our local heritage industries of farming, fishing, tourism and the arts so businesses have access to employees to stay solvent and provide goods and services to local residents year round.
