Petition to the city of Notre-Dame-De-L'Ile-Perrot.

Environmental Advisory of N-D-I-P, Marie-Hélène Perron.

Climate change is single handedly the most critical concern at the moment. The increase in temperature and frequency of climate disasters will only get worse with current trends. The impacts associated with climate change will have large effects on ecosystems around the globe. We, the undersigned from the regions of Montreal and Monteregie, call upon the Environmental Advisory of Notre-Dame-De-L’Ile-Perrot to create community gardens and/or expand and improve upon existing ones. Community gardens are an appropriate start at improving climate change at the local level. According to the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) transportation is a top 3 greenhouse gas emitter by human activities in the United States, the investment into community gardens will help lower the need to import and transport food related goods. In addition, community gardens allow for designated green areas, which not only benefit humans but also other species, such as bees and butterflies that help pollinate. With recent urban development within our region, the amount of green spaces have been greatly reduced; the addition of community gardens that allow for protected green spaces have a beneficial effect on climate change because they absorb carbon dioxide (See Here) and reduce global transportation of produce (See Here). The addition of community gardens will bring the community closer and inspire more people to hopefully be involved.
