Dear Community Members,

We can all agree that we are worried for our children.  Some are worried for their children's education.  Some are worried for their children's social/emotional health.  Some are worried for their children's physical health.  Some are worried for all of the above.

There is no perfect plan for what is far less than perfect times.  Not everyone will be happy.  This has been such a divisive issue...but one thing I'm seeing that seems to be something just about everyone agrees on is the need for in person learning for the core classes.  The biggest complaint is not regarding the amount of time spent in school, though that is a factor for full time working parents of elementary students.  From an education standpoint, the biggest concern is maintaining a full time day of learning.

The following proposed plan, while possible for elementary, is aimed at middle school, which has greater issues when it comes to social distancing, which seems to be one of the main issues for the board and for those advocating for a hybrid option.  It is a concern of mine as well...the passing periods are semi controlled chaos at best and 6 inches of distancing cannot be maintained, let alone 6 feet.  This plan could be a hybrid option with remote non-core classes but I prefer to call it condensed as it will pack a full day of core learning into half the time physically at school.  This is slightly modified from a previous suggestion as it did not take into account the passing period after homeroom.  Alternatively, the 1st period class could be homeroom.

7:40-11:10am Group A attends

12:10-3:40 Group B attends

3 hours, 30 minutes physically in school daily allows for:  45 minutes each for the core classes of Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts.  It allows for a 10 minute homeroom for attendance and temperature taking if necessary.  It allows for four 5 minute passing periods which could be reduced to three minutes to allow for time for students to sanitize desks in classrooms.

Most importantly, this plan allows for greater social distancing in classrooms and hallways while not losing important in person instruction time for the core classes.

If you are in favor of full time school because you are worried about the quality of your children's education suffering,  this plan works for you compared to other hybrid models.  If you struggle with wanting your children in school but are worried about social distancing, this plan works for you.  Please sign this so we can try to get our children the best education possible while also keeping them and your family as safe as possible.
