I have incurred a $13,003 debt to the ATO in relation to a VET FEE HELP course supplied by Careers Australia. The course was a Dual Diploma of Community Service and Counselling. I believe i have been charged this fee due to a technicality and the fee itself does not reflect the service gained and the courses were agreed to under misleading circumstances.
Careers Australia signed me up to this course on the proviso that it would help me gain work. They also offered inducements such as a laptop upon completion of the first unit of study. This lead me to feel uneasy, I then cancelled the course on the 17/10/15. I enrolled on the 09/09/15.
I have since provided all of this information to the Commonwealth Ombudsman. They have advised that i am liable for the charges as i cancelled the course 3 days after the first unit census date.
Considering the entire Dual Diploma course fees were $25,000, how can the first unit be $13,003. Based on this alone i believe i am being charged excessively. This is without the fact that they offered inducements of which i did not receive and also the promise of improving my chances to find work.
I only became aware of this debt whilst lodging my tax return this year. To say i was shocked to find the debt is an understatement.
Now the ATO are wanting me to pay back the debt back. I believe i should not be liable for this and would like your help.
Please help me, this will majorly disadvantage my life for many years to come should the debt remain.
