Militarization of the police must be stopped. Such escalation can only lead to more violence between citizenry and an already overzealous, brutish police force.

We're simply not a town that needs a militaristic approach to policing. I think our current SWAT resources are more than adequate

I believe that Mayor Myrick has taken positive steps with his recent proposal to reinvigorate community policing in Ithaca. I believe that returning this HS money would send a strong message to the community that he is spearheading real change. Additionally, as we have seen in Ferguson, there is a danger that once police have access to military equipment, they then want to deploy that equipment instead of/in addition to relying on their relationships with the community.

We are seeing an increasing militarisation of the police. That divides them from the rest of the community, and causes relations to deteriorate. This downward spiral must be stopped.
