I am well aware of the level of preparedness with which today’s high school and even college graduates enter the work force. All too many arrive without ever having had the opportunity to apply their academic studies to relevant real-world situations. I know that my concerns about this are shared by many of my peers.

I was recently introduced to the position paper “Careers – Get Ready!” prepared by the NYS Association for Career and Technical Education (http://www.nysacte.org), and I have to say that I fully support the objectives and actions this document recommends. The simple acquisition of knowledge cannot be the beginning and end of education. The development of skills and experience that empower students to apply what they are learning is what gives that knowledge value. In the “old days” practical experience was often left to the employers to provide, but this is no longer acceptable. In business today, the new hire that hits the ground running is the one most likely to remain employed.

From kindergarten through high school, the academic program has become more compressed, with children being expected to handle more challenging material at an earlier age than was common for my generation. I find it ironic that this dynamic has not been complemented by an equally aggressive thrust to prepare students to apply all of this advanced knowledge in the workplace. Even more egregious is absence of a formalized process for helping students to identify their individual strengths and plan for their future careers.

Make no mistake, that workplace is changing, and so are the skills required to succeed within it. So is the nature of post-secondary schooling, as more and more individuals choose online and other non-traditional ways to advance their educational goals. Career and Technical Education is not an expendable elective; it is a means for ensuring success on the part of students and the economy as a whole.

This campaign is urgent!! The Regents have an agenda item on CTE, Monday, May 19th. Our voices need to be heard!
