The Commission on Presidential Debates was founded in 1987 to provide a nonpartisan forum for see presidential candidates to discuss the great issues of the day with the solemn reverence for the American voter for which politicians are famous. Unfortunately, the last presidential debate they facilitated was marred by one candidate interrupting the other 73 times and both candidates treating several questions as optional. Chris Wallace, the moderator of the debate, has been widely recognized for failing to make the candidates adhere to the rules of the debate.

There are two further presidential debates scheduled, with one on October 15 at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami and one on October 22 at Belmont University in Nashville. The American people deserve a debate moderator at both events who understands the value of respectful dialogue, which is why an American must not be allowed to moderate. We need a person with a proven ability to keep a heated debate confined within a set of regulations. John Bercow, longtime Speaker of the House of Commons in the Parliament of the United Kingdom, is such a man.

He is well-known across the pond for his ability to scold prime ministers, opposition frontbenchers, and backbenchers alike for violation of the eight centuries of tradition and regulation of the House of Commons. He kept the UK’s beloved Prime Minister’s Question Time to a minimum of clownish behavior over his decade-long tenure as Speaker. It should be noted that this feat was accomplished in a House that included Boris Johnson. Speaker Bercow has already proven able to properly judge how much speaking time for Donald Trump is in the public interest. Bercow should still be acceptable to Trump, as his trademark phrase “order” is half of the president’s current favorite phrase.

Speaker Bercow’s retirement from Parliament leaves him with ample time for relaxing hobbies such as debate moderation. Therefore, we urge the CPD to thank C-SPAN’s Steve Scully and Kristen Welker for their interest in civic duty but recognize that there is only one man who is up to the task, and invite John Simon Bercow to moderate both of the remaining presidential debates.
