The Philippines is one of the countries that is now suffering a worsening state of press freedom especially in this time of the pandemic. New restrictive measures against media entities are being implemented through intimidation, surveillance, and other means.

For covering topics of corruption or criminality, Filipino journalists face both physical and online threats of violence. In addition, other journalists bear a disproportionate share of the burden of sexual harassment, internet trolling, and attacks for gender bias.

The increasing violence against journalists has resulted in numerous media killings that have gone unsolved throughout the years, and the perpetrators have managed to flee accountability.

"Why does Press Freedom Matter?", The freedom of the press has been fundamental to the existence of democracy. And, as a byproduct of democracy, our society has enjoyed stability, equality, free expression, and the protection of our human rights. A free press matter for it fights for the truth, holds the powerful accountable, and informs the people/voters valuable insights about the politics and policies.

Let us all be heard! Everyone now has the power to contribute to the protection of press and media freedom. Let this petition serve as an eye-opener and a wake-up call to everyone who is unaware of the value of journalistic freedom in society. This should also help to put additional pressure on the government and the Commission on Human Rights to preserve people's democracy and freedom of the press.

For the democracy we needed, freedom of the press should be defended.
