With the Reading School District's important decision to go to virtual instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FREE access to the internet is more vital than ever. Children deserve to be able to learn regardless of their circumstances. However, there are problems to ensuring this.
Currently, the City of Reading is one of the least connected cities in the country. Some estimates put it at 49% of its population having no access to cable, DSL or broadband. Over 32% of households have no access to any type of broadband whatsoever. Reading currently has neighborhoods hovering above a 30% unemployment rate and 40% poverty levels.
Comcast is a multi-billion dollar multinational corporation that has received a multitude of tax breaks from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They are the #1 cable and internet provider in the City of Reading and have almost exclusive access to customers. They also have plans that are out of reach for tens of thousands of Reading's residents. Even their 'cheap' plans don't allow truly FREE and secure access for everyone, as there are various restrictions and opt-in requirements and barriers.
Our City of Reading officials and our Reading School District officials MUST come together to petition Comcast to provide FREE access to EVERYONE in the City of Reading. COVID-19 has ravaged our families, our neighborhoods and our city. The least Comcast can do to be a proper community partner is ensure children are able to truly have access to their vital education.
