Diante Downes started this petition to Mayor Columbus City Council

The city of Columbus, Ohio is a richly diverse city, home to many nationalities, ethnicities, immigrants, and Native Americans. As one of the more diverse and economic strongholds of the state, as well as one of the most populous and up-and-coming cities in the nation, it deserves a name that recognizes how far it's come through history, and not one that is representative of a leader known for committing horrendous acts against Americans.

Columbus, Ohio is named after Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, who had come to the Americas in search of trade. What followed after Columbus' settlement led to the slaughter and genocide of the Native Americans. The history of our nation and how it was settled is certainly a murky one, but that does not have to continue to haunt our future.

We can not change history, but we do not need to honor the name of a man so associated with abominations against our native predecessors. We in Columbus are proud, welcoming, friendly people. These attributes are not fitting for the explorer our city was named for. Our city does not represent the abhorrent nature of the crimes he was accused.

I propose we change the name of the city of Columbus, Ohio to something that is more inclusive of our diverse and welcoming residents and represents our growth as one of the nation's most sought after places to call home and do business in.

I would like to bring before the council a discussion to rename Columbus, Ohio. Some potential names I believe may be more fitting for the capital city of Ohio include Central City, Ohio or Nationwide, Ohio. Central City is more indicative of geographical location within the state and is a more neutral name which can be interpreted as more inclusive and representative of the melting pot of residents that has settled in Ohio. While Nationwide, being one of the city's major businesses as well, offers an opportunity to further connect with the rest of the nation. We could also discuss offering the residents to vote on a new name or have major businesses in the area bid on a new name. Our bright and hopefully less murdery future city name awaits the grace of this council.

Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal and sign the petition.
