Demand to Mailman Columbia School of PH to drop additional service fees and reduce tuition
Why this petition matters
Since announcing an online, remote curriculum for the Fall semester of 2020, Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health has stated that the cost of tuition for the upcoming online semester will not be reduced. While we are sympathetic to the decision not to provide a decrease in tuition due to the cost of research obligations, professor contracts, and student employees, we demand that the Mailman School of Public Health, in light of an online curriculum, : (1) eliminate fees for on-campus service fees including, but not limited to, computer fees, document fees, international student fees, student activity fees, and health service fees and (2) re-evaluate the decision regarding tuition costs. Since students will not be on campus this Fall semester, we see no validation in the university's decision to charge students service fees which we will not be able to utilize. Additionally, since many Ivy Leagues already offer online courses free of charge, we feel as though the new format of learning should adequately be reflected in tuition price. These demands are a result of what we, as students, believe to be a decrease in the promised quality of education, and how we, as students, believe this decrease should adequately be depicted in the cost of our education.
