Note: This petition is meant for the undergraduate schools: Columbia College, SEAS, GS, and Barnard.

The situation this year is not very different from the last Spring semester. While professors were prepared for the switch to online learning, a lot of the issues faced by students were not resolved. Columbia resolved some issues, but the problems caused by the grading scheme this semester needs to be addressed. I believe that those problems will be resolved by changing the grading back to P/F for this academic year.

The different time zones causes many problems; a lot of classes require students to attend classes synchronously regardless of the timing and perform as well as students who are in the United States or in similar time zones. They are also expected to take exams during those time slots that may be extremely late in the night and are expected to perform as well (and will be graded as such) as students in time zones that are close to the United States. A lot of classes are required and do not offer a different section, which means students have no option but to take those classes. Another issue is the inevitable different home situation for each student. Some students may not be able to perform well because of those situations, which can range from increased responsibilities to domestic violence. Some students were planning to come back to campus but was understandably inevitable; however, this change to online-only happened very close to the beginning of the academic year that students didn't have another option to consider. Finally, the change to the P/F will also allow incoming freshmen to adjust to the current situation.
