Demand that Columbia Add an Option to Opt In to Organ Donation During Registration

In one year, 486 New Yorkers die while waiting on the transplant list. Nearly 120,000 people are currently on the waitlist and 10,000 of them live right here in New York City. Only 30% of New Yorkers ages 18 and up are organ donors while 52% of Americans are organ donors worldwide. This is a problem of accessibility.
We should increase accessibility to organ donation by signing this petition addressed to Barnard and Columbia’s administration, which will be sent to them at the end of the semester, calling for a reform in our registration process which would allow students to register for the New York organ donor registry, Donate For Life New York. This has already been implemented in SUNY and CUNY schools and, as such, is clearly a realistic goal to hold. Columbia should set the precedent for other private institutions to put an emphasis on making organ donation a priority.
