Due to COVID-19 issues and restrictions, water fountains at Columbia Junior High have been shut off and are not available for school use. Due to this, the students do not have a place to get water at school regardless of financial status. There are multiple water vending machines placed in separate locations around the school building. However, in order to get water from these vending machines you have to pay dollar. While a dollar may not seem like a lot at first glance, students may not have access to money easily. Along with that, if it becomes a continual thing it can add up to a lot more money that school year than a student can pay. The school consist of 8th and 9th grade students, most of whom can not get jobs yet. Even if you are to bring your own reusable water bottle, there still is no place to fill it up. Not to mention the incredible waste to the environment with all the plastic. I believe that the school should make a greater effort to provide the students with the necessary things they need to get through the day, starting with a place to fill water bottles without cost.
