On Thursday, January 17, 2019 two men were found dead, 30-year-old Derrick Roper and 61-year-old Calvin Witherspoon inside their apartments at Allen Benedict Court in Columbia, S.C. due to carbon monoxide poisining. The low income property managed by Columbia Housing Authority received recent complaints of gas leaks from residents and failed to move swiftly to correct the issues. This morning Mayor, Steve Benjamin held a press conference and deemed the property uninhabitable. All residents were instructed to evacuate immediately.

In the Mayors press conference the public was assured residents would be relocated to comfortable safe havens. Instead they have been relocated to 2 star motels infested with bugs and prostitution. Allen Benedict Court has 244 units, more than 200 families and 400+ residents all of color.

Families are currently homeless.

This petition is being made to bring light to the horrible conditions families were forced to live in under the direction of Columbia Housing Authority (CHA). CHA currently manages more than 20 other housing projects. We question their leadership. We need these families cared for delicately. We need proper housing for every single family. This includes temporarily and permenantly.
