Hi everyone,

This petition was created to advocate for the extension of winter break for all Columbia Heights students! Currently, we get 10 days off from school when what we really need is 2 full weeks. Many schools throughout Anoka-Hennepin and across MN are requesting more days off and receiving them. Let’s do the same!

Besides, we need it; we’ve worked hard these past 3 months, and the stresses of Covid are only making it worse. Transitioning to being a year online to right back into the jumble of school is stressful, and even nerve-racking for some! We should be allowed more time to reassess and recuperate.

Additionally, the time frame is set up weird anyway. If we follow our current schedule for break, we get off of school starting on Thursday, December 23rd, and finish our break on January 2nd. Instead, it would be wise to request that our break begins Monday, December 20th, and again, lasts through Sunday, January 2nd.

Lastly, the extension of our winter break wouldn’t just benefit students but also teachers! They need time to refocus and take some more time off as well. They work hard like us and it’s important to honor their time working as well as ours.

Remember, many schools have 2 full weeks’ break with the entirety of their last week off. Fun fact: if you search on Google “how long is winter break,” the answer is actually 3 full weeks! When our break is only 10 days, it’s reasonable to ask for 14 days. We ask that you sign this petition to request that Columbia Heights students’ Winter Break be extended by 3 days to ensure we get 2 full weeks of Winter Break!
